FIELD GUIDES / CONSENT MANAGEMENT

Does your website need a CMP?

Seeing a cookie banner on another company's website does not settle what your website needs.

A consent management platform can help coordinate privacy choices across website tools. Whether it is appropriate depends on what your website does and which requirements apply. Not needing a CMP does not mean there are no privacy responsibilities.

Start with what runs on the website

Think beyond the analytics tool. Advertising pixels, embedded videos, chat widgets and website-platform integrations may also collect or use information. Some tools come through Google Tag Manager; others can be installed separately.

Understanding those connections makes the platform conversation more useful. Which tools need to respond to a choice? Who can change their settings? Can the existing setup support the intended behavior?

Separate business requirements from product features

Your organization and its advisers decide which privacy requirements apply. The technical question is how the website and its tools can put those requirements into practice. I can help with that connection.

If your team needs regional settings, consider both recognized and unknown locations, along with how saved preferences are applied. Choose the behavior your organization needs before comparing platform features.

Compare the fit before replacing the platform

A CMP may be useful when several tools need coordinated controls or your team manages preferences across websites. Consider how it works with your website platform and who will manage its configuration as tools change.

If you already have a CMP, an integration problem is not automatically a reason to buy another one. The existing platform may need configuration changes or a better connection to your website's tools.

I can help work through the technical fit and setup. A CMP is one part of broader privacy work; it does not guarantee compliance or protection from lawsuits.
