Why does GA4 show fewer purchases than Shopify?

GA4 rarely matches Shopify's order count exactly.

The short answer

Shopify records every order in its own system. GA4 only records the purchases its tag was able to send from the visitor's browser. So GA4 will usually show fewer, and the gap is worth measuring before anyone decides what it means.

Measure the gap fairly

  1. Pick a closed date range, a week or more and a few days old.
  2. In Shopify, count online store orders only. Leave out point-of-sale, draft and test orders.
  3. In GA4, count purchases with a unique transaction ID, not just purchase events.
  4. Match time zones and currency in both.
  5. Compare the counts. Then compare a sample of order numbers directly.

What usually causes the gap

  • Visitors who decline tracking in the consent banner.
  • Ad blockers and browser tracking protection.
  • Purchase tracking that runs through Shopify's customer events, where a custom pixel isn't set up to send the completed checkout, or sends it without the order ID.
  • Two installations sending the same purchase, such as the Google & YouTube app plus a custom pixel, which inflates GA4 instead of shrinking it.
  • Consent choices not passed from Shopify's banner to the tracking, so purchases are blocked or sent when they shouldn't be.

When the gap means something is broken

  • GA4 shows more purchases than Shopify. That almost always means duplicates.
  • The gap jumps suddenly after an app install, theme change or checkout update.
  • Purchases appear in GA4 without transaction IDs or revenue.
  • Specific products, payment methods or regions are missing entirely.

A steady gap you can explain is normal. A gap that moves without a reason isn't.

Why this is harder to debug than it used to be

Shopify runs checkout tracking in a sandbox, so Tag Manager's preview mode can't see it. Checking it means watching the actual requests the pixel sends and matching them to real orders.

If this is happening on your store

The Measurement & Consent Audit traces real orders from Shopify through GA4, Google Ads and Meta, with consent accepted and declined, so you know which purchases go missing and why.
